When Fast Food Calls, Our Society Falls

Salaaz Newsletter: Week 77

Have you ever noticed that no matter where you go to eat outside, everything happens to be on the unhealthy, greasy, and sugary end of the spectrum? What this means is that we live in a world where access to healthy food is significantly more challenging than access to cheap, satiable, yet chronically deteriorating foods. Here are some chilling facts about long-term fast food consumption.

Many people eat fast food because they either have little energy or time to make home-cooked meals or crave the addicting flavours created by high salts, sugars, and fats. Where this becomes a problem is that healthy food becomes inconvenient, requiring significant time for preparation; has a shorter shelf life; is more expensive; and is less accessible than processed alternatives.

Here is an official Canadian study that demonstrates an overview on weight and height measurements, indicating a steady rate of weight gain. The toll is being taken on citizens.

What Can Be Done?

It might not be possible to shut down Mcdonalds and Burger King, but it would be helpful in recognizing that between 2.8 million to 4 million people die every year from obesity. Part of this is because we live in an era that isnt designed to cater towards people's needs with nutrional value at the expense of profit. Along with increasing nutritional laws and transparency here is a local restaurant that models what convenience should feel like.

Healthy Planet Kitchen

Convinient food should benefit people. Convenient food does not have to eliminate sugar or fat, instead just increase mindful cooking and dishes. Not just salads but soups, breads, sandwiches, smoothies and desserts, Healthy Planet Kitchen has it all and is a model of what fast food should embody.

With a little bit of intention, you get delicious healthy fast food.

Even the pickiest eaters will not find healthy food tasting bland or gross when made with thought and care. But when deep fried potatoes and deep fried chicken are the only potatoes and chicken available on the market to eat right away within a five mile radius, you end up with a problem. Right now we are stuck in an era where the profit incentivized options are eating away the health of our country.
