Week 27: 🚫 Boycotts Under Attack: What's Going On?

From BDS laws in the U.S. to smear campaigns, there's a global push to criminalize economic activism - don't let it work

Right now, we're seeing a growing trend—especially in the United States—where governments are passing laws designed to punish people and groups involved in certain boycotts. Many of these laws specifically target the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which uses economic pressure to push Israel to change its policies towards Palestinians.

Legislative Measures Restricting Boycotts:
Sudden Shift to Restriction of Free Speech

Big things are happening around free speech in America right now—especially if you're a student or activist. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 🚫 Anti-Boycott Laws:
Did you know over 30 states have already passed laws that stop state agencies from working with any company or organization that boycotts Israel?

  • 🎓 Campus Crackdowns:
The Trump administration has seriously ramped up pressure on universities, especially targeting students and groups supporting Palestine. Columbia and Harvard lost federal funding, and are accused of backing so-called "illegal protests." Is this about safety—or silencing debate?

  • 📱 Social Media Surveillance & Deportations:
ICE has arrested and deported students just because of their social media posts supporting Palestinians. Many see this as an extreme move that threatens basic freedoms—especially free speech online. It’s not just talk; students have actually been arrested and deported for their posts.

With federal funding cuts, campus crackdowns, and ICE targeting students based on online activity, activists are rightfully asking: is free speech itself under attack?

Deportations:
Targeting Students and International Communities

Alright, folks—big things are happening, and it's more important than ever to get involved. Here’s what’s up:

  • 🌎 International Students:
The U.S. government just canceled visas for at least 36 international students and recent graduates from California schools—think Stanford and the UC system. Officials say it's due to national security, but it's really about cracking down on anti-Israel protests.

  • 🇺🇸 International American Nationals:
Since January 20, 2025, deportations of Indian and Latin American migrants have skyrocketed. Over 28,319 people have been sent away from the U.S. in just a few months. These numbers are huge—and behind them are real lives and families being disrupted. Your voice matters in challenging these policies.

Don’t let this slide—get informed, spread the word, and stay loud. April 28th is around the corner; make your voice count!

Don’t Stay Quiet:
Make Some Noise!

Look, your voice matters—a lot. But here’s the deal: those in power want you quiet because silence benefits them, not you. Boycotts and consumer activism are powerful ways to speak up, demand change, and hold corporations and governments accountable. But if they start criminalizing our voices, we’ve got to get louder, not quieter. Here’s how you can make some noise and ensure no one silences your right to speak up:

📢 Stay Loud and Proud:

  • Know Your Rights: Stay informed about free speech laws and how you’re protected—knowledge is power!

  • Amplify Your Message: Share your stance on social media, organize local meet-ups, and join movements fighting for change. Your network is your megaphone.

✊ Team Up:

  • Build Alliances: Connect with groups and organizations defending freedom of expression. Strength in numbers is real—use it.

  • Support Each Other: Stand together against intimidation. The more united we are, the harder it is to silence us.

🔥 Hold Leaders Accountable:

  • Contact Decision-Makers: Write emails, make phone calls, and attend town halls. Make sure politicians know you’re watching, listening, and voting based on their actions.

  • Demand Transparency: Question authorities openly about their stance on consumer activism and boycotts. Push them to commit publicly.

Remember, activism thrives when we refuse to back down. When they try to silence you, speak even louder. Your voice isn’t just your power—it’s our collective strength.

Keep making noise—they can’t silence us all!
