Week 21: Ramadan Mubarak!

Good morning, readers! With Ramadan approaching for those who observe Islam, this week we’re highlighting some essential items that may be on boycott lists to help you stay informed.
Dates:
Falsification and Profits from Stolen Lands

You've likely heard that one of Israel's most popular exports during Ramadan is dates. Before purchasing, be sure to check the label, as many of these dates come from farms established on confiscated land. Let's take a closer look at the numbers:
The global date market was valued at $31.03 billion USD in 2024 with 85.24% of the supply from the Middle East and Africa
According to Haaretz, 68 illegal farms have been established on confiscated Palestinian lands, covering more than 370 acres. These farms are estimated to produce over 40% of Israel’s date exports, generating more than $223 million USD.
Israel remains a leading exporter of Medjool dates.
The U.S. has imposed a ban on dates from Gaza while exclusively importing Israeli dates, even when labeled as “Palestinian Dates.” To avoid supporting settlement agriculture, be cautious of dates listed here.
Make sure to thoroughly check the packaging before making a purchase. Israel exports a wide range of products, including hummus, avocados, pomegranates, and more. Let’s stay mindful and make informed choices this Ramadan.
Cold & Frozen Drinks:
We know late night Ramadan drinks hit different

Just a gentle reminder: a boycotted drink remains boycotted, even during Ramadan. We get it—nothing beats a cold Coke or Sprite with your biryani, or a Ginger Ale alongside your Korma to ease that acid reflux. And yes, even that late-night Ice Capp after Taraweeh (we see you). Stay strong!
Let's not overlook the true cost of these drinks—it goes beyond just the price tag.
These beverages contribute to oppression, water shortages, misleading health campaigns, and more, all of which we've covered in our previous newsletter.
Before we introduce some alternatives, you can explore a comprehensive boycott list here.
The global beverage market is projected to reach $276.44 billion USD by 2025
Shoutout to the “Rooh”, our favourite brand Rooh Afza is a national and international favourite cold drink of choice, make sure to keep a bottle in your car (and some milk).
This Ramadan, let's keep the people of Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, and all those facing hardship in our hearts and prayers.
For many, this is an incredibly difficult time. As we reflect on our blessings, let’s cherish moments with our loved ones, engage in acts of kindness, support our communities, and strive for personal growth.
From all of us at Salaaz, we wish you a heartfelt and blessed Ramadan Mubarak!
