Week 18

Hi readers, we would like to apologize for the delay in this week’s newsletter. This week we will start seeing the affects of the ongoing trade tensions between Canada and USA. The tariffs have taken affect on both sides, but what effects should we expect? And what has effects have started taking place since the announcement.

USA-Canada Trade Totals:
The world’s largest trade between two countries

We all know of the trade tensions going on because of the Tariff’s introduced by President Trump. But how much do Canada & the U.S.A. currently trade and how much is at stake

  • In November 2024, Canada's exports to the U.S. increased by 6.8%, while imports from the U.S. rose by 4.1%. This resulted in Canada's trade surplus with the U.S. expanding from $6.6 billion in October to $8.2 billion in November.

  • Canadian Chamber of Commerce reports, there are over $3.6 billion of goods & services that cross between U.S. & Canada on a daily basis, fuelling a $1.3 trillion annual trade.

  • The same report shows there are over 1.4 million U.S. jobs & 2.3 million Canadian jobs tied to this trade. Making Canada the #1 export market for 34 U.S. States.

  • The 25% tariff could shrink Canada’s GDP by 2.6% ($1,900 per family annually) and USA’s GDP by 1.6% ($1,300 per family annually)

Tariff Announcement Impact:
What can change, and what has already changed?

The announcement of the tariffs changed a lot around both countries, and even worldwide:

  • The announcement of tariffs had already led to declines in stock markets and fluctuations in currency values globally.

  • Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, announced he will be banning all contracts with US companies, starting with the $68 million deal with Starlink

  • Seven Canadian provinces have already started removing all US alcohols from their shelves.

  • Some stores have preemptively removed US products and started putting signs showing “Buy Canadian Instead

  • Loblaws, Canada’s largest grocery retailer announced they will double down on Canadian-made products, and will find Mexican alternatives to US products
