The Nefarious Battle of Ethics Versus Grocery Store Convenience

Salaaz Newsletter: Week 33

Habit breaking and a Direction Towards Change

If you were sent right now to purchase milk, where would you go? Likely the closest, cheapest, most convenient, and familiar grocery store you are accustomed to. What would it take for you to go to your local farm instead—extra money, extra time, extra effort to navigate, a cost only few are willing to make.

But what if buying groceries was tied to your salary? Whether you are a teacher, Walmart employee, or medical receptionist, where you buy from is directly tied to your income, job opportunities, and the surrounding influences that control your life. The monopolies and oligopolies control all the brands you buy and use, from your daily face cleanser to how you navigate the web.

But here is why you need a direction for change and a break from your habit of going to the cheapest local grocery store available to buy milk.

The most common local grocery stores are owned by parent companies that have unethical roots and violate Palestinian human rights:

Loblaws and Sobeys: Brands that proudly support Israel, fund and advance its organizational initiatives, including being one of the major sponsors of Walk with Israel during the current genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza.

Some grocery stores owned by these companies to avoid:

  • Loblaws

  • Fortinos

  • No-Frills

  • Real Canadian Superstore

  • Shoppers Drug Mart

  • T&T supermarket

  • Sobeys

  • FreshCo

  • Foodland

Additional grocery stores to avoid with similar unethical roots: Metro, Adonis, Food Basics, Costco, and Walmart.

Feeling blue since this practically covers the majority of convenient and local grocery stores, try your local Asian markets!

Where to Find Groceries without Supporting Apartheid

These shops have you covered with practically all of the produce and grocery needs you would normally want but without the unethical ties:

Oceans Fresh Group: including Oceans Food Market, Nations Fresh Foods, and Grant’s Food Market

  • 8 locations in the GTA

  • Affordable and competitive grocery prices

Local Farms—Why We Should Support Them

Fresh produce from the farm not only has the richest flavours but also carries the most nutritional benefits:

  • Carries higher nutritional retention that is typically lost in grocery store produce when washed, shipped, and stored from thousands of miles away.

  • emerging research suggesting that eating food grown in your local soil and climate may better support your gut microbiome and immune system.

  • Farmers produce sustainable and organic practices that use fewer preservatives, pesticides, and additives (ex. BHT, Artificial Dyes, and Chlorpropham).

  • Natural Immunization: The bacteria found closer to your region provides greater resistance towards local allergens, pathogens, and environmental stressors found in your region.

  • Greater chances of choosing whole and unprocessed foods are the go-to over processed junk typically found in grocery stores.

Nothing beats a glass of fresh non-Modified Milk Ingredients: Organic, Grass-fed, Whole Milk

Every dollar you spend is a vote—for the kind of world you want to live in.

So next time you reach for milk, ask yourself: Am I feeding my body, or fueling a system I stand against?

Choose fresh. Choose ethical. Choose local.

Because convenience should never come at the cost of conscience.
