Soft on the Outside, Toxic on the Inside? The Truth About Plushies
Salaaz Newsletter: Week 70
Plushies are not just for children; adults love them too. But have you ever thought about the fact that maybe the cute stuffy has a concerning history, produced by concerning factory and with consequences towards the environment and your health? Probably not, but you may want to reconsider the brand you are using.
Here are some health concerns that make plushies seem like bacteria mops:
They are potentially carcinogenic, meaning they may lead to cancer, due to their use of chemicals like phthalates, naphthalene, and PAHs in dyes.
Polyester materials are made of plastic, contributing to the inhalation of microplastics, something still in the process of being studied for its long-term health effects. As of right now studies are indicating potential risks like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and metabolic disorders.
90% of plushies are made with polyester fibres, which harbour bacteria way more than natural material; as you're playing with them, they are picking up lots of dust and bacteria, especially for children.

Children using plushies seem harmless but may as well be making them sick.
So if you feel like your child is getting sick all the time while having a plushie, maybe it is time for a change.
If you aren't concerned about your own health, plushies are a great toy; however, be warned that plushies are also environmentally detrimental.
The environment it takes for polyester to break down is 200 years. Until then, it is adding to prolonged waste that contributes to the killing of over 100 million marine animals every year that die from plastics of the sort.

With big brands of plushies such as Ty Warner, owner of Beanie Babies, refusing to go to prison for his tax evasion. And PopTart, manufacturer of Labubu plushies, is not compliant with Chinese labour laws. It is better to not take the risk of buying plushies from questionable brands that may be sickly in the long term.
